Peaks / Ridges

Ridge Venting

Over 90% of homes in North America utilize ridge venting and cap shingles for the peaks on their roofs (we will discuss non venting roofs later). Due to ventilation requirements, ridge venting is a must, in most cases. Without ridge venting (exhaust venting) and intake venting (intake venting) shingle manufacturers and certified roof installers will not warranty the roof. Because of this, it is important to have the ventilation discussion with your roofing contractor. The main reason this is brought up as a potential leaking area is because of what some unexperienced roofers and handypeople do and did. Not all roofers or contractors care about ventilation and just put caps on the peaks of roofs. When this does occur, the caps are made from remnants or extra shingles from roofing the main areas of the roof and are not designed to make the bend that is necessary on a roof peak. Also, these remnants cannot withstand winds and are pulled off the roof by moderate winds. This is not a concern if the roofer used is certified and adheres to all manufacturer installation specifications.
